Great Oaks home with holiday lights Great Oaks is a planned, award-winning community of 130 contemporary-style homes in a rustic, wooded setting. It is located at the eastern end of Fairfax City, Virginia, a self-governed city that became independent of Fairfax County in 1961. Fairfax was settled in the 1700's and is now home to more than 20,000 residents spread throughout several diverse suburban neighborhoods and a historic downtown area that has recently undergone major redevelopment, including new shops, cafes, taverns, restaurants, condominiums, and a new public library. For further details, see the Old Town Redevelopment website.

According to Forbes magazine, the City of Fairfax was named one of "America's Top 25 Towns To Live Well". A January 2013 article in the Washington Post's Real Estate section offers a comprehensive community description.

Great Oaks is known for its majestic mature trees because the developer retained 65% of the original green space when the community was planned. The homes have free-flowing room design and zero-based lot lines that maximize the house size and minimize the yards. Each home has a two-car garage. One road serves as the entrance and exit, and houses are laid out on short streets that end in cul-de-sacs. The cluster grouping of homes offers magnificent landscaping without land maintenance headaches. It is a private community where the residents jointly own the roads, sewer system, pool and common spaces.

Fairfax High School is within walking distance of Great Oaks and is an award-winning public school, which has perennially ranked among the tops in the nation. Two middle schools and an elementary school are nearby.

The City of Fairfax has excellent municipal services and boasts one of the lowest property tax rates in Northern Virginia. It is adjacent to the Fairfax campus of George Mason University, with its educational, athletic, and cultural offerings.

Great Oaks is located off of Old Lee Highway, minutes from the Vienna/Fairfax Metro Station on the Orange Line and just across the street from the Army Navy Country Club's Fairfax course and near several local parks, bike and hiking trails. It also has its own city CUE bus stop on Old Lee Highway with service around Fairfax and to the Metro, as well as close proximity to major road systems such as Route 66, Rt. 50 and the Washington Beltway (I-495) and four major shopping malls.
